UPA likely to push quota bill in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: After winning the battle for FDI in retail with the help of Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati, the UPA government is planning to introduce an amendment bill for reservation of Scheduled Castes and Tribes in promotions in government jobs in the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

In lieu of her support on the key FDI vote, Mayawati had sought early passage of the bill. The bill seeks to amend the Constitution and will need to be passed by a two-thirds majority in both Houses of Parliament. While the Left has said that it will support the amendment, the Bharatiya Janata Party has not yet made its position clear.

Mayawati's chief rival, the Samajwadi Party has opposed the bill in order to woo the upper caste vote bank. Before the FDI debate and vote began in the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House has remained dysfunctional over the quota bill. It remains to be seen whether the Samajwadi Party will let the House run if the quota bill comes up.
