New Delhi: The death in police custody of accused Khalid Mujahid, who died under mysterious circumstances in police custody while being taken to a prison in Lucknow from Barabanki, is under probe. According to sources, Justice RD Nimesh Commission has questioned the police version of Mujahid's arrest.
The police allegedly forced Khalid Mujahid to sign on a statement accepting that he was involved in the Lucknow and Faizabad courts blasts in November 2007.
Under pressure Akhilesh Yadav government has decided to table the report in Uttar Pradesh Assembly next session.
Khalid Mujahid died in police custody in May. While the autopsy report has not yet come, but scratches and injury marks on his body reportedly point to police torture.
According to police officials, Khalid Mujahid was a member of terror group HuJI and was involved in the bomb blasts in Lucknow and Faizabad courts.
But his arrest was always under question. Former chief minister Mayawati had constituted the Justice RD Nimesh Committee in 2008 to enquire into the arrests of Khalid Mujahid and Tariq Qasmi, who were allegedly involved in 2007 serial blasts in UP. The committee had finalized and given its report to the government in August 2012 but the Akhilesh government has yet not made it public.
According to the sources, the Nimesh Committee has stated that that Khalid and Tariq were brutally tortured by the police and forced to sign on a statement accepting their involvement in the blasts. The report has also named the police officers who allegedly tortured the duo Report said, those policemen name must be specify so the action could be taken against them.
