UP: Crackdown on VHP sankalp diwas, BJP MP, 340 others arrested
The VHP says that it is observing the Sankalp Diwas with an aim to reinforce pressure for the building of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh police has arrested BJP MP Adityanath ahead of VHP's proposed 'Sankalp Diwas' in Ayodhya on Friday.

Adityanath was arrested from a train in Gonda as a preventive measure. Police has so far arrested around 340 people, including former BJP MLA Lalu Singh, and put 42 others under house arrest on the eve of the rally.

This after VHP said it will go ahead with its proposed 'Sankalp Diwas' in Ayodhya on Friday despite the state government ban.

Heavy security arrangements are in place in the temple city. VHP has given a call to observe 'Sankalp Diwas' in Ram Sewak Puram in Ayodhya to take a resolve for launching an agitation for rebuilding the Ram temple in Ayodhya. A similar 84 Kosi Yatra was a big flop last month in the face of a stern crackdown.

IG, Law and Order RK Vishwakarma confirmed that 340 people have been arrested, 42 have been placed under house arrest and 39 people have been charged with CrPC Section 107/16.

Those arrested included VHP spokesman and former BJP MLA Lalu Singh and added that there was no information regarding the arrest or house arrest of senior VHP leader Ashok Singhal.

To prevent VHP activists from attending the rally, three-tier barriers have been put up on Saryu bridge, Faizabad district and Ayodhya, he said, adding as many as 2,000 jawans of RAF, police and PAC have been deployed in the area. As a precautionary measure, the local administration has set up a temporary jail at the Police Line, the IG added.

The state government has put a ban on short messaging services (SMS) in Ayodhya. More than 1200 people across the state have been placed under preventive arrest.

Officials said strict vigil was being kept on movement of people to the temple town of Ayodhya and all borders to Faizabad were sealed Thursday.

Director general of police (DGP) Devraj Nagar, principal secretary (Home) Anil Kumar Gupta are camping in Ayodhya to ensure fool proof security.

Traffic between Lucknow-Gorakhpur has been diverted through Barabanki, Gonda-Basti and Sultanpur, officials said.
