Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday condemned Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor for his “derogatory cattle class” remarks about people travelling in economy class, and advised him to tender resignation.
Talking to reporters in Jaipur on Thursday evening on the sidelines of the roza iftar party at his residence, Gehlot said Tharoor’s statement was “very unfortunate”.
“Tharoor is occupying a responsible and most dignified post and he should have not made such condemnable and unfortunate remarks,” he said.
Gehlot suggested that Tharoor should not only tender an apology to the nation but also come forward to submit his resignation.
Tharoor has once again kicked up a row describing the economy class in flights as “cattle class”.
The Congress has denounced his remarks made on social networking website Twitter as “insensitive and unacceptable”.
Tharoor, who represents Thiruvananthapuram seat in Kerala in the Lok Sabha, was in the midst of a controversy along with External Affairs Minister SM Krishna last week over their staying in a five-star hotel even as the country was facing a serious drought situation.
Both the Ministers, however, vacated their hotels after Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee publicly asked them to move out to the Bhavan of their respective states.
