Rahul Gandhi's elevation as Congress President certain, party leaders tight-lipped

New Delhi: With Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi leading the party from the front on a host of issues, it is for certain that Congress will soon undergo a major revamp which will stamp his authority over the party. Even though Congress leaders are tight-lipped about Rahul taking the charge as party President, there are enough hints that it may happen soon.

A 'rejuvenated' Rahul single handedly took on the Narendra Modi government by first addressing the Kisan Khet Mazdoor rally, then voicing his opinion against Land Acquisition Bill and net neutrality in the Lok Sabha. He even undertook 15 kms long padyatra in Vidarbha district of Maharashtra and met various buyers organisations on the Real Estate Bill.

"Leaders across the party have requested Rahul Gandhi to take the charge. When change will happen, it will happen and it will be according to the constitution of the Congress," said party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala.

Earlier, another Congress leader Sachin Pilot confirmed that Rahul's elevation would happen only after there is a consensus on the Congress leadership issue. "When Rahul Gandhi is elevated it will happen through consensus. Whatever will be done will not be a wishlist of one or two or four leaders. There will be an unanimity and the choice of the Congress party and workers and that will happen when the time is right," Pilot had said.

Rahul became the butt of all jokes after he went for nearly a two-month long sabbatical to a mysterious place. Not missing any opportunity to target him, the Bharatiya Janata Party also questioned his interest in politics.

But Congress leaders are all out to defend him with Surjewala saying, "There is no wrong time to do a right thing. Rahul Gandhi is leading from the front."

Backing Surjewala is his colleague Sharmistha Mukherjee who said, "Rahul Gandhi has come at an appropriate time. He has come back with a plan and is dealing with the issues maturely. He is pro-actively leading the debate."

Hitting out at the BJP, Sharmistha said, "It shows BJP's mindset. Making fun of Rahul Gandhi was so unfortunate."

Rahul is attempting to portray the Modi government as anti-farmer, anti-poor and pro-corporate and called it a 'suit-boot ki sarkar'. With facts in his hand and enumerating previous UPA government's initiative, Rahul is no longer the same leader who used to pull up his sleeves and even tore an ordinance to protect tainted leaders. His speeches in the last few weeks have been precise and ripped apart the Modi government's claim of being pro-poor.

After realising the importance of social media, Rahul Gandhi has made his debut on Twitter. "We should have been more active. We were unable to utilise it the way BJP and AAP did," admitted Sharmistha.
