New Delhi: The Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi is on a roll after he returned from a two month secret hiatus abroad. Quiet literally, he is on a roll. After his return, Rahul Gandhi addressed a big rally of the farmers against the proposed Land Acquisition Bill at Ram Leela maidan in Delhi. He took on the Modi government at the Centre. The Rahul watchers could sense a change in his tone and tenor. He is not the same Rahul Gandhi whom many in the Congress had earlier dismissed as a ‘reluctant’ politician with no future.
Rahul Gandhi, who now looks more energetic and combative has been in the news for right reasons after his return. He was the first big leader to rush to hospital after a farmer from Rajasthan Gajendra Singh allegedly committed suicide at an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) rally in New Delhi, last week. His party “hijacked’’ the issue of farmers and managed to put both the BJP and the AAP on the back foot for the first time in years.
Rahul Gandhi’s next visit was to Kedarnath temple in Uttara Khand. He trekked more than 16 kilometres in the snow clad Himalayas to reach the holy shrine to witness the opening of the portals of the temple after the Winter season. He had pitched a tent and spent a cold night there with other pilgrims.
After that he took a train ride to Punjab. He travelled in unreserved third class compartment with other common passengers.
His performance in the Lok Sabha has also been quiet impressive. Taking on the Modi government and its farmer policies, Rahul Gandhi made an interesting speech. The serious Rahul was looking pleasant and attacked the Modi government with full force.
Next day, he spoke about net neutrality trying to reach out to the urban middle class.
Again on Wednesday, he launched a tirade on the Modi government. Mocking Modi’s ‘Make in India’ campaign, he said “your government says make in India. What about farmers? Are not they made in India?”.
According to Congress workers his newfound energy has enthused party’s rank and file. Some insiders claim that he has even changed the inner circle and wants to be more accessible to media and general public. After his return, he has been freely interacting with the media wherever he goes.
Importantly, the Congress leaders who questioned his leadership qualities have also been sidelined signalling that he will take complete charge of the party in near future.
One has to wait and see how long he will be like this. His party men hope that Rahul Gandhi won’t disappear again.
