New Delhi: The CPM-RSS clashes in Kerala's Kannur district had its reverberations in Parliament on Wednesday and the House was adjourned after BJP and Left MPs locked horns in the floor of the House.
The BJP was demanding the implementation of a Kerala High Court order to deploy Central forces in Kannur. On Tuesday, the high court had severly criticised the political killings there and suggested a permanent deployment of Central forces.
The court's stinging observations came in the wake of the recent clashes between CPI-M and BJP cadres that left seven persons dead.
This led to a verbal dual between the BJP and the Left parties, prompting the agitated Speaker Somnath Chatterjee to describe their behaviour as amounting to 'murder of democracy'.
Pandemonium gripped the Lok Sabha as soon it met for the day and as Chatterjee's repeated pleas to restore order went unheeded he adjourned the House till 1 PM.
As soon as the House assembled, BJP members were on their feet demanding suspension of Question Hour to take up the issue of violence in Kerala where the saffron party and Left parties have been at loggerheads.
Levelling charges against the Left parties, the BJP members said the situation in Kannur in Kerala was bad and there needed to be urgent discussion on the matter.
The BJP raised the matter in the backdrop of Kerala High Court's observation that 'bloodshed' in Kannur could end only by timely intervention of the Union government by deployment of sufficient Central forces.
The Left parties strongly objected to it and a verbal clash ensued leading to pandemonium in the House. Agitated at the pandemonium, the Speaker termed the members' behaviour as 'shameful'.
"It is murder of democracy," he said. Repeated pleas by the Speaker to restore order went unheeded, prompting him to adjourn the House till 1 PM.
