Coimbatore: Coining his party's three decade old slogan 'one note one vote,' BJP candidate in Thondamuthur constituency in the district, A Sridhar Murthy, is seeking a Rs one coin while canvassing for votes for the April 13 Assembly polls.
Hitting the campaign trail some 15 days ago, much earlier than Congress or AIADMK rivals, 41-year-old Sridharmurthy wants to drive home the point that he was not among those who purchased votes by giving notes.
Sridharmurthy, a native of Karadimadai village in the same constituency, wants to create awareness among people on the value of their votes and not be lured by political parties.
Sridharmurthy claimed he has received an overwhelming response from voters and has so far collected nearly 13,000 Rs one coins. Though people come forward to give more money, he was just receiving one rupee, he said.
On campaign days, he visits at least 600 to 800 voters at their homes and a few voters on the roads and shops and collects an average of 800 coins, he said.
'If I am able to collect more than 50,000 coins, victory will be mine as I can see the brightness and cheer on the faces of the voters, who, it seems, are not happy with their earlier MLAs," Sridharmurthy, an advocate by profession, said.
Claiming that people in the area wanted a change and have promised to support him,Sridharamurthy said his lawyer friends were also campaigning for his victory during free time.
Sitting MLAs M N Kandasamy of Congress and S P Velumani of AIADMK are his rivals in the constituency.
