Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has been given “two-point low doses” of insulin after his blood sugar level spiked, sources at the Tihar jail said. A source added that the dose was administered by a Tihar medical practitioner on suggestion of an AIIMS doctor, following which CM’s sugar levels are “under control”.
His blood sugar level reading was found to be 217 around 7 pm on Monday, following which the doctors at Tihar looking gave him the insulin, an official was quoted by news agency PTI.
AIIMS specialists, during a video conference with the chief minister on April 20, had advised Tihar doctors that insulin could be given to him if his sugar level crosses a certain level, he added.
Meanwhile, AAP sources said Kejriwal’s blood sugar level had crossed 320 in Tihar. They said this is the first time that insulin has been given to him in the jail even as his sugar level had been increasing for some time.
“It was said that Kejriwal does not require insulin, but now it has been administered. CM’s sugar levels had been crossing 300-level, and he had been stating this over-and-over again. Yet the authorities did not give him insulin and we had to approach court for it,” AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj said.
“Does any prisoner who falls sick knock court’s door for treatment? In order to put Arvind Kejriwal in trouble, there are conspiracies to harm him. Today the BJP completely stands exposed,” Bharadwaj alleged.
Meanwhile, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva alleged that the AAP leaders’ “only political hope” was to “create public sympathy” over the health of Kejriwal in view of the Lok Sabha elections.
“No doubt Arvind Kejriwal is a diabetic but his sugar is under control in jail as he didn’t raise demand for insulin in the video consultation with the doctors of AIIMS,” he said.
Rebuking the charges, the CM, in a letter to the jail administration, said he has raised the issue of insulin for 10 days, every day, multiple times.
“I showed my high sugar levels to every doctor who came to see me. I showed them that there were 3 peaks in the sugar level every day — between 250-320,” he said in his letter.
“I also showed them that my fasting sugar level was in the range of 160-200 every day. Almost every day, I demanded insulin. Then how could you make such a statement that I never raised the issue of insulin?” Kejriwal asked.
The chief minister alleged that the Tihar administration issued a “false and misleading” statement under “political pressure”.
The Delhi chief minister was arrested on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money-laundering case linked to the Delhi government”s now-scrapped excise policy. He is lodged in Tihar jail since April 1.
