New Delhi: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) backtracked on Tuesday night saying Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference President Omar Abdullah was not an accused in the infamous Srinagar sex scandal of 2006.
"Home Minister (Union Home Minister P Chidambaram) has only said what I said. I am not saying he (Omar) is guilty. I am only saying his name figures in the list," PDP leader and former deputy chief minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig told CNN-IBN referring to Chidambaram giving a clean chit to Omar on the sex scandal case.
Rubbishing allegations that the PDP was devoid of any substantial issues, Baig said, "We do not want to destabilise the government. But this is a public issue. High Court has already said CBI has failed in its investigation. If we do not raise this issue in the assembly where do we raise this?"
However, Omar's father and Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah blamed the PDP leader of levelling false charges against Omar and said that he would quit public service if charges are proved against Omar or him.
"Baig's claim is totally baseless. He was law minister. Who stopped him from taking action?" asked an agitated Farooq.
"They have no issue. This is not the way a responsible Opposition should behave," said the National Conference leader.
Baig went on the defensive and said that both the J-K government and Opposition should leave the issue behind and work for the betterment of the state.
"For some unknown reasons Farooq has a magnetic affect on me. My soft corner is for his son also. We should leave this behind and work together for the peace and prosperity in Jammu and Kashmir. This whole thing was created due to the behaviour of the Speaker. We can work together. As opposition we will constructively support the government," assured Baig.
Farooq hoped that PDP would keep its words.
"We will work for the betterment of Kashmir. I hope PDP will follow what Baig is saying about forgetting this and going forward for Kashmir," he said.
Earlier on Tuesday an angry Chief Minister Omar Abdullah resigned from his post after Baig's allegation.
But Governor NN Vohra rejected Omar's resignation.
