New Delhi: It was one political dinner that raised many eyebrows. A dinner hosted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi prior to Presidential and Vice-Presidential elections had even led an advocate to file a petition against it.
But on Monday, the Delhi High Court dismissed the petition seeking action against Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi for hosting the party for MPs.
Holding the petition as a "politically-motivated" one, Justice V B Gupta imposed a cost of Rs 25,000 on the petitioner, Ravinder Kumar, a practicing lawyer in the High Court.
"The petitioner has failed to prove locus in the case and it has been filed on the basis of heresay. It is devoid of any merit. The petition is nothing but an abuse of process of law and it has to be discouraged," Justice Gupta was quoted as saying.
The HC order came on Ravinder’s petition challenging a trial court's order, which refused to entertain the complaint.
Dismissing the petition, the court said, "No abuse of law was committed by the trial court and only the Supreme Court can inquire into the disputes arising in connection with the Presidential and Vice-Presidential elections."
