NDC meets to discuss battle against Naxals
Headed by the PM and attended by CMs, the NDC will chalk out a plan for development of the Naxal-hit states.

New Delhi: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is in town for a meeting of the National Development Council where tackling Naxalism will be the main focus Saturday. Headed by the Prime Minister and attended by Chief Ministers of all states, the NDC will chalk out a plan for the development of Naxal-hit states.

As part of its strategy, the Commission will ask the state governments to include locals in the development process through implementation of the Panchayat Extension to Scheduled Areas Act.

Sources have told CNN-IBN that the Planning Commission has already pulled up both state governments and the Environment ministry for delaying projects in tribal areas, thereby contributing to Naxal growth.

The NDC is meant to be a bridge between the Centre and the state but is usually caught in confrontation between the Centre and Opposition-ruled states.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar criticised the Centre on the eve of the meet for resorting to populist schemes at the cost of States and the Union Ministers misusing Central forums to criticise Opposition-ruled state governments.

"There is a growing tendency on the part of the central government to start populist schemes for which they take credit at expense of states. It is not good that in a federal structure that Union ministers use Central resources and its forums for criticising and launching a campaign against duly elected state governments," Kumar said.
