The Union government on Monday banned the export of cotton amid fears that its prices could shoot up on account of declining production in the current season.

"I was shocked to learn about the immediate ban imposed on cotton export today. Lakhs of cotton farmers of Gujarat would be the ultimate victims of this decision and suffer loss of crores of rupees," Modi said in the letter.

"It is my request that the ban on the cotton export should be immediately lifted. Alternatively, Shankar variety of cotton of Gujarat should be kept out of the export ban as it is more acceptable in the international market," he added.
