He takes over Gujarat Cricket Association reigns from Narhari Amin.

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is on a winning streak. A day after the Bharatiya Janata Party under Modi's leadership won five out of seven Assembly seats in the Gujarat by-elections, the Gujarat Chief Minister on Tuesday wrested the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) presidentship from the Congress.

Modi took over the reigns of the GCA after he was elected as its President in the Annual General Meeting of the body in Ahmedabad.

"We will be discuss ways to popularise the sport among the youth and to use an integrated approach for development of the sport," said Modi after his win.

Till now GCA was controlled by Congress leader Narhari Amin. But Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah was engaged in long drawn political as well as legal battle with Amin group for the last one and half year for the control of cash rich GCA.

Recently, the BJP had managed to win over the Central Board of Cricket of Ahmedabad (CBCA) which is a part of GCA from the Congress group, after which Amin had resigned.

Following his win in GCA, Modi has joined a select band of politicians who have taken over a chief of cricket bodies.

Some of the other prominent names who are actively involved in cricket-politicking include National Conference's Farooq Abdullah who is the President of Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, BJP leader Anurag Thakur is the President of Himachal Cricket Association while another veteran from BJP Arun Jaitely is President of Delhi District Cricket Association.

Congress' Rajiv Shukla is Honorary Secretary of Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association and former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief and President-elect of International Cricket Council Sharad Pawar is the President of Mumbai Cricket Association.

Son of former BCCI chief late Madhavrao Scindia and Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia is the President of Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association.

Lalu Prasad is trying hard to get Bihar Cricket Association recognised by BCCI but hasn't been successful so far.
