Kolkata: After West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hinted at a "political conspiracy" behind the Nov 14 Nadia police firing which claimed a man's life, the Congress on Saturday accused her of making "irresponsible comments".
"She should refrain from making irresponsible comments. Instead of trying to give a communal colour to the incident, the administration should go to the root of the problem," Congress MP and Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said.
He also rubbished the West Bengal government's claims that the police-mob clash in Tehatta was a result of disharmony between two communities. "I have talked to the people there and there is no communal discord. But there is a fear psychosis because the police have been continually harassing people and ransacking their houses," said Chowdhury.
"What has happened has happened, but what must be looked at is why did it happen? Who are behind this and which political colour is there in the incident?" Banerjee had said on Friday hinting at a political conspiracy.
Both police and the state government have claimed that there was a dispute between two communities over a piece of land which subsequently resulted in the police-mob clash and the police had to fire in self-defence.
Banerjee too has endorsed the "self-defence" theory. One man was killed, allegedly in police firing, and nine people were injured in Tehatta in Nadia district Wednesday following a clash between a mob and police.
Meanwhile, the state government has asked the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to probe the incident. The government has also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter but is yet to issue a notification.
