New Delhi: The family of the teenage girl who was gangraped and allegedly murdered in Kolkata, on Tuesday met President Pranab Mukherjee in Delhi seeking a CBI probe into the case. The family has said that the President has assured help. "We have been given assurances, we are going back with assurance," said a family member.
Earlier in the day, the family also met National Commission for Women chief Mamata Sharma. The family had on Monday filed a writ petition in the court and sought financial compensation from the West Bengal government. In the petition, the family said that it has no faith in the state police investigating the case in the wake of the alleged negligence earlier.
The victim's father had also written to West Bengal Governor MK Narayanan, complaining against police and hospital authorities for not providing adequate facilities.
The 16-year-old girl succumbed to her burn injuries on December 31, 2013 in Kolkata. The police had on January 2 said that the girl who was gangraped in October didn't commit suicide but was set ablaze by the accused. The police have appealed in the court to initiate charges against two of the accused in the case.
The police alleged that the accused poured kerosene on the victim and set her ablaze after she refused to withdraw the rape complain. They are alleged to have threatened the victim to withdraw the rape complaint.
The accused - Ratan Sil and Minta Sil - were the landlords of the victim's family and have been charged with rape and murder now. Six men are believed to have raped the 16-year-old on October 25. Two days later, the same accused raped her again for registering a complaint with the police. Not stopping at that, the victim and her family were intimidated, pressured and maligned.
On December 23, she was set ablaze and died on December 31 after fighting for her life for over a week. The six accused and two others have been booked and arrested.
