The Congress MLA from Karnataka’s Shorapur constituency, Raja Venkatappa Naik, died on Sunday during treatment after a prolonged illness, the Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru said.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Congress National President Mallikarjuna Kharge have also shared condolences on social media.

“Deeply saddened to hear of the demise of my long-time political comrade Raja Venkatappa Nayaka. I met him three days ago and inquired about his health. The passing away of Raja Venkatappa Nayaka, a philanthropic personality, is an irreparable loss both personally and to state politics. I pray that the departed soul may rest in peace and his family and fans find strength to bear the pain,” Siddaramaiah wrote in a post in Kannada.

Naik’s party colleague and former cricketer Prakash Rathod took to X to condole the death of the Shorapur MLA.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of Shorapur Constituency Congress MLA, Raja Venkatappa Naik. He was a dear friend and well-wisher. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and constituents,” Rathod wrote.

In 1994, Naik contested elections from the Karnataka Congress Party (KCP) against Shivanna Mangihal of Janata Dal.
