Tiruchirappalli: AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa on Thursday filed her nomination from temple town of nearby Srirangam for April 13 Assembly elections, asserting that Tamil Nadu would become "an economic power" if her party was voted to power.
The former chief minister, who has switched over to Srirangam, where her family had roots before migrating to Mysore from rural Andipatti, filed her papers before Election officer P Gunasekaran.
She had asked her party candidates for the other 159 constituencies also to file their nominations on Thursday, considered auspicious.
Jayalalithaa was given a rousing reception when she arrived at the airport by a special aircraft from Chennai.
She is pitted against DMK's N Anand, a novice to electoral arena.
Asked why she shifted to Srirangam from rural Andipatti, the former chief minister said the town was nearer to Chennai than her previous constituency.
On whether there would be any special package for Srirangam constituency if the AIADMK came to power, she said "Special packages will be given for all the constituencies."
Evading a direct reply to a question on the impact of MDMK led by Vaiko leaving the alliance, she said "We are always forward looking party."
When asked whether the BJP-Janata Party combine would affect AIADMK chances, she said the people wanted to end the "corrupt" DMK regime.
