Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday directed that Union of India and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar be made parties in a plea regarding levy of entertainment tax by Maharashtra government on Indian Premier League (IPL) matches.
The High Court has also asked the Union government to explain if there was a code of conduct for ministers who hold posts in sports associations.
The court gave the direction on a public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed by Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai. It allowed the petitioner to make Pawar a party to the case, as there are some allegations have been made against him in the petition.
The PIL demands that Maharashtra government should recover entertainment tax from the organisers of IPL. The petition also alleges that in January this year the state government decided to levy the entertainment tax on IPL but the decision was not implemented.
The court adjourned the hearing till June 22.
