Gyaneshwari suspect killed to wipe out proof: Mamata
PCPA leader Umakanto Mahato was killed in a police encounter.

Kolkata: After her remarks over Maoist leader Azad's killing sparked a row, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday raised questions over the encounter death of a prime suspect in Gyaneshwari Express derailment.

Speaking at a function at Howrah Station, the Trinamool Congress chief appeared to suggest that Maoist-backed People's Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCPA) leader Umakanto Mahato's killing in a police encounter was aimed at "wiping out" evidence in the case.

Referring to the killing of Mahato, she said: "If they think they can wipe out evidence by killing a prime suspect in the Gyaneshwari Express sabotage, it is a wrong theory."

After the Gyaneshwari Express derailment, which killed 148 people, Banerjee had claimed that ruling CPI(M) could be behind the incident, an allegation strongly denied by the latter.

On Sunday, too, without naming any political party, she said:

"Do not kill people for your political interest. Do not cause mishaps by sabotage."

What's your reaction?
