Kanpur: An FIR has been filed against Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi for alleged model code of conduct violation by not taking up the route it had prescribed to the leader for his road campaign in Kanpur.

The case has been filed in Kanpur for violating Section 144.

Kanpur District Magistrate Hari Om on Monday said that Rahul stuck to his route, despite having been assigned an alternative route by the Election Commission.

"We had allotted a separate route for Rahul's roadshow considering he would have faced traffic," the official said.

"The route of the road show would have ended in a traffic jam. We had given them an alternate route. It was for the safety of Rahul Gandhi as well. But he did follow our orders and carried on his road show. This is violation of rules. We will see what action needs to be taken. We may take action against Rahul Gandhi as well," he said.

Reacting to the filling of FIR against its General Secretary, the Congress said that there has been no violation of model code of conduct and the Kanput district administration is acting under the pressure of Mayawati government.

"We condemn the fact that they tried to stop Rahul Gandhi's road show today. The BSP is deliberately trying to disrupt Rahul Gandhi's road shows because they are afraid of Rahul Gandhi's popularity," said the Congress.
