Kolkata: Amid controversy over political affiliation of Sourav Ganguly, the Election Commission on Sunday deferred selection of the former Indian cricket captain as its brand ambassador to promote and popularise voting.
The EC order on Ganguly followed Tranamool Congress' allegation that he was associated with a particular political party and that he had worked as an ambassador of the West Bengal government, particularly the WBIDC.
TMC had submitted a CD to EC officials here containing observation of a state government minister on the matter to strengthen their case.
After examining the CD, the EC office found no evidence of Ganguly's affiliation to the CPM and his working as a brand ambassador for the West Bengal government. The observation was sent to the Election Commission last Thursday for a final view.
Ganguly and noted percussionist Bickram Ghosh were selected by the Election Commission which produced an audio-visual capsule for telecast on major channels to create interest among the people to vote.
A senior EC officer said that selection of Ghosh has, however, been cleared. "We can start the promo any time," the officer said.
