Defamation case: Court summons Sheila Dikshit
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has filed a defamation case against city BJP chief Vijender Gupta.

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has been directed by a Delhi court to appear in person on November 9 in a defamation case filed by her against city Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Vijender Gupta. Sheila had filed a defamation suit when Vijender Gupta called her "villain" and "cheat" before the MCD elections in April 2012.

Metropolitan magistrate Saumya Chauhan had earlier summoned Gupta on Dikshit's complaint. While directing the Delhi BJP president to appear before the court, Chauhan said its is a "fit case to call the respondent under section 499/500 (criminal defamation) of the IPC".

Dikshit moved court against Gupta after he refused "publicly apologise" for putting up posters, banners and hoarding across Delhi accusing the Chief Minister and her government of looting thousands of crores of rupees by misrepresenting facts on power tariff in collusion with private companies involved in electricity distribution. Her petition claimed that Gupta’s actions were meant to defame her in public.

But Gupta’s lawyer said in the court that his client wanted to highlight the corruption in Delhi government and the posters were not meant to target Dikshit personally. Dikshit had also demanded a token Rs 1 as compensation for the alleged damage caused to her reputation by Gupta.
