New Delhi: Former CPI-M general secretary Harkishen Singh Surjeet’s is seriously ill and remains unconscious after he suffered a cardiac arrest, doctors said Friday.

The 92-year-old Surjeet, who has been unwell for last few months, was admitted to Metro Hospital on May 6 with fever and respiratory problem.

“We were about to discharge him Thursday but he suffered a cardiac arrest. His heart and pulses have been revived but he is still unconscious,” said a senior doctor at the hospital.

“He is under ventilator and his condition is very serious. A group of doctors are observing his health developments,” the doctor, who cannot be identified because of hospital rules, told IANS.

The Communist veteran had been almost confined to his Teen Murti Lane residence in New Delhi for over a year because of ill health.

Considered at one point a kingmaker of coalition politics, Surjeet is now a special invitee to the CPI-M's Central Committee. Earlier in the day, his daughter-in-law, Manjeet has however, said that Surjeet was “critical but is better now”.
