EC has directed transfer of certain police officers in Gujarat ahead of polls.

New Delhi: Ahead of elections in Gujarat, the Election Commission has directed the transfer of certain police officers in the state.

Chief Election Commissioner, N Gopalaswamy said, "Anybody who has completed three years in a particular place or if he happens to be in his own native place should be transferred."

"Some of transfers may be because of the Gujarat riots and some may not be. We have asked for information as to which police officer was posted where and whether he was in a particular place before 2002 and so on," he added.

"Some officers who had worked in a particular place in 2002 have been brought back to those very areas. This is a cause of concern to the political parties", Gopalaswamy was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.

He said that it was political parties who had asked the Election Commission to look into certain police transfers as some 'tainted' officers have been 'brought back' during the reshuffle.

He said the other issues that came up during the meeting related to interchange of police sub-inspectors (PSIs) and police inspectors (PIs) in rural and urban areas, which needed to be looked into.

Gopalaswamy has demanded that officials, who are supporting the present government and who have served for more than three years in one position be shifted to other department to ensure free and impartial elections.

"We also received complaints that the Gujarat government was forcing cable operators not to show DD News and only relay state government advertisements," the CEC was further quoted as saying.

Gopalaswamy said the parties demanded that religious places should not be allowed to be used during campaigning and also wanted immediate enforcement of the code of conduct and monitoring of speeches with religious overtones of political leaders.
