New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation has taken up the death of senior BJP leader and Union Minister Gopinath Munde. He died in a car accident in the national capital this month.
A special crime unit of the CBI will be investigating the case. The move came after Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Maharashtra BJP chief Devender Fadnavis met Home Minister Rajnath Singh and sought a CBI probe into Munde's death. Munde died of multiple internal injuries after his car was hit by another in Delhi.
Munde died due to shock and a haemorrhage following injuries to his neck and liver in a road accident in Delhi on June 3. Earlier last week, Maharashtra BJP leader Pandurang Phundkar had sparked off a row by claiming that Munde wanted to leave the party at one point of time as he was allegedly being humiliated by other party members. Phundkar had also sought a CBI probe into Munde's death.
"Munde faced struggles at every step. He was (once) about to leave BJP. I opposed it. He faced humiliation many times but dedicated his life to the party," Phundkar had said. "Congress had offered him two ministerial posts at the Centre and the state," Phundkar said after a resolution to mark Munde's contribution was moved in the House by Maharashtra parliamentary affairs minister Harshwardhan Patil.
"There is a lot of confusion among people about the circumstances leading to his death. There should be a CBI probe into the matter," said Phundkar, who became emotional while recounting his association with Munde going back to 1974. Phundkar is a former leader of opposition in the legislative council.
Council chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh had also said that he was for a high-level probe into Munde's death. He had informed the House that he would write to Rajnath Singh and Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan requesting such a probe.
