BJP says Shekhawat free to woo MPs, MLAs
Vice President isn’t asking legislators to defy their parties: Swaraj.

New Delhi: The BJP on Thursday dismissed the Congress’ allegation that former deputy PM L K Advani’s appeal to MPs and MLAs to vote according to their conscience in the Presidential candidate was aimed at encouraging cross voting.

BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, whom her party is supporting, and UPA candidate Pratibha Patil were free to appeal to all MPs and MLAs while campaigning in the Presidential election.

"The term cross-voting is not at all relevant in Presidential election. Since these questions (of cross-voting) have come up after Advani's letter, I thought I should clarify the position," said Swaraj.

Swaraj accused Parliamentary Affairs Minister P R Dasmunsi of using "unparliamentary" language by dismissing her allegations of phone tapping as "rubbish and foolish".

She also accused union minister Renuka Chowdhury of arrogance for her comments that the NDA leaders were not too important to be wiretapped.

Swaraj, who has consistently been saying that Shekhawat believes there should be no personal allegations against Patil, claimed reports about differences in upper echelons of

BJP over its vitriolic attack on the UPA-Left candidate were incorrect.

On its part, BJP alleged Patil had been unsuccessful in handling a cooperative bank, a sugar factory and an institute.
