Baharampur Elections Results 2024: TMC Star Yusuf Pathan Beats Congress's Adhir Ranjan
Yusuf Pathan has won a seat in the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. The cricketer contested for the elections for the first time.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) star and former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan witnessed a big win in West Bengal’s Baharampur constituency. Yusuf was competing against Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury for the Baharampur seat and is leading, at the time of reporting.

According to the Election Commission of India, Yusuf received 423,451 votes and won by a margin of 64,084. Meanwhile, Congress member Chowdhury got 359,367 votes. BJP candidate Dr Nirmal Kumar Saha was third with 323,685 votes.

Speaking with PTI, Pathan said, “I congratulate all of you who have been with me. I am happy. It is not only my win but also of all the workers. Records are made to be broken. I respect Adhir Ranjan. I will continue to do so. I will make a sports academy first so that they can make a career. I will also work for industries. I will be living here and working for the people. I will also be in Gujarat as my family is there. I have got a new family in Baharampur. I talked to Didi (Mamata Banerjee). They are happy.”

According to a PTI report, Yusuf started off slow, with initial trends placing him on the third spot in the seat. However, he picked up numbers as the counting progressed, leading against Congress’s Chowdhury and BJP’s Nirmal Kumar Saha. “The lead margin reflected only an initial trend since many rounds of counting still remained before the final results were declared,” ECI officials told PTI.

Yusuf Pathan contested the Lok Sabha elections for the first time. His win has come as a surprise to many, especially since Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has been a five-time MP from the constituency.

Pathan was nominated for the seat in March. As reported by NDTV, the former cricketer said at the time, Pathan thanked Mamata Banerjee for considering him as a candidate. “As representatives of the people, it is our duty to uplift the poor and deprived, and that is what I hope to achieve,” he said.

At 5 PM, TMC was leading in West Bengal in 29 constituencies. Meanwhile, BJP was ahead on 12 seats. INC had a solo lead in the state.

On the national level, BJP was leading with 243 seats. They are currently leading in 222 constituencies while they have won 21. Meanwhile, India has 231 seats (wins and leads) with Congress having 98 seats. They have so far won four of it.
