Pune: The five students of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) who were arrested for 'gherao' and allegedly confining director, Prashant Pathrabe on Monday evening , have been granted bail on a surety of Rs 3,000.

Magistrate Narendra Joshi of a local court rejected the prosecution's plea for police custody of the students, and granted them bail.

The ongoing battle between the FTII authorities and students got a new dimension when the police entered the college campus on Tuesday night and arrested 5 students, accusing them of allegedly detaining Prashant Pathbare without his consent.

Earlier in the day, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the arrest of the FTII students, and said that they were not criminals.

In a further development , the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has formed a three-member committee that will visit the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) on August 21 in order to assess the situation.
