Advani hails BJP's quantum leap in Karnataka
Advani said BJP's triumph in Karnataka will be a turning point.

New Delhi: Describing the BJP's victory in Karnataka as a turning point and a situation comparable to the one witnessed in 1989, Leader of the Opposition L K Advani said the results also were indicative of things to come in the next Lok Sabha polls.

Congratulating BJP's Chief Ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa under whose leadership the party had emerged victorious, Advani in a statement said the Karnataka verdict was against the Congress's opportunistic policies and the Janata Dal(S)' politics of betrayal.

He said he had no doubts about BJP's triumph in Karnataka will be a turning point comparable to the quantum leap in parliamentary strength that the BJP achieved in 1989.

The party had mere two seats in 1984 but won 86 seats in the 1989 elections, he recalled saying that the party's victory march became unstoppable leading to the formation of the BJP-led NDA government in 1998 taking the nation to a bipolar polity ending the one party era of the Congress.

He said two decades later, Karnataka was another turning point breaking the Congress' hegemony. ''BJP has strength and ability to form governments in northern and western states. It could form governments in states of Orissa and Bihar with alliance partners. Now for the first time, the party is in a position to form the government in south,'' he said.

''This geographical expansion of BJP, and the simultaneous shrinkage of the Congress almost all over the country, shows the shape of things to come in the run-up to the next parliamentary elections,'' he said.
