New Delhi: A total of 205 amendments will be moved by the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha where the United Progressive Alliance Government is in a minority and trying hard to cobble up the numbers to get the legislation passed.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will move 28 amendments to the Lokpal Bill in the Rajya Sabha and will also support the amendment proposed by the Trinamoool Congress, which will propose 37 amendments, on the Lokayukta clause.
BJP leaders want the Bill to be passed with the amendments and has worked out three sets of common amendments with other parties including the Left parties. The party BJP will support one amendment by the Left, either on the Central Bureau of Investigation or on the appointment of the Lokayuktas in the states.
The Biju Janata Dal will move six amendments, Smajwadi Party seven, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) 41, Communist Party of India (Marxist) 22, Communist Party of India four, Telugu Desam Party 23 and RJD one. Four amendments have been proposed by the Independent MPs.
Congress is facing a tough time in convincing its key ally Trinamool Congress for supporting the Lokpal Bill and voting in its favour.
"We met Pranab Mukherjee and we made our stand clear yesterday. We told them we will press for division on Lokayukta deletion," said Trinamool MP Mukul Roy.
The Congress core group is meeting to finalise its strategy and the party is alsi in talks with the Bahujan Samaj Party.
