Schools in Tirunelveli Likely to be Closed Until January 1
All schools in Tirunelveli district has received a circular to this effect, which states that all schools — primary and matriculated included — should not open until January 1, 2024

As the Meteorological department predicted moderate rains in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district in the coming days and floodwaters are yet to recede in several places, the Chief Education Officer (CEO) has declared a holiday for all schools in the district from December 22 until January 1, 2024, The New Indian Express reported.

Every school in the district has received a circular to this effect, which states that all schools — primary and matriculated included — should not open until January 1, 2024. If students are made to attend class against their will, strict measures will be implemented. During the aforementioned time, schools are not allowed to hold any extra classes or send text messages requesting students to attend, reports added. In addition, the CEO circular further stated that the half-yearly examination date will be revealed at a later date.

According to the report, Chief Educational Officer (CEO) of Tirunelveli District G Muthusamy announced that the district’s government and private schools would observe the half-yearly holiday, which was announced by the school education department, starting Saturday, December 23, and ending on January 1, 2024. Following district collector KP Karthikeyan’s announcement on December 21 that schools could reopen for Classes 9 to 12, only a small number of schools reopened on Friday, December 22.

Due to the extremely heavy rainfall in almost all parts of the Tirunelveli district, the district administration declared a holiday for schools from December 18 to December 21. The CEO issued an order to all government and private schools to follow the school education department’s instructions regarding half-yearly holidays. Meanwhile, Anbil Magesh, the education minister, inspected the flood-affected schools.

“The minister instructed the officials to clear the water-logging in Tirunelveli Town Jawahar Corporation Higher Secondary School and Nanguneri Sankara Reddiar Boys Higher Secondary School. He also visited the Radhapuram NVC Higher Secondary School and gave various instructions to the officials and headmaster,” read a statement issued by the district management.

The cyclone in the Bay of Bengal along the coast of South Sri Lanka caused unprecedented heavy rains in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi districts on December 17 and 18. A flood-like situation had been created throughout the region by the 48-hour nonstop downpour, with the Thamirabarani river, numerous lakes, and ponds flooded, and many villages heavily submerged.

Residents of these districts were stranded and caught in floods, causing great distress. After the rain stopped, rescue and relief efforts were stepped up, however, the water is yet to recede in several interior areas of the region.
