India ODI captain Rohit Sharma on Sunday became the fifth Indian batter to complete 18,000 runs in international cricket joining the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to have reached the milestone.
Incidentally, this is the 100th match in which Rohit is leading an Indian team at the international level.
Rohit got to the landmark when he swept England’s Adil Rashid for a four during an ODI world cup match at Lucknow’s Ekana Cricket Stadium.
ICC World Cup: Schedule | Results | Points Table | Most Runs | Most Wickets
Sachin Tendulkar continues to be India’s and world’s highest run-scorer at the international level with a whopping 34357 runs during a legendary career spanning 24 years.
Kohli is the second on this list having made 26121 runs so far after having made his India debut in 2008.
The current head coach of Indian men’s cricket team Rahul Dravid is third on his list with 24064 runs he scored between 1996 and 2012.
Former India captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly is fourth with 18433 runs for India he accumulated between 1992 and 2008.
Overall, the 36-year-old Rohit is the 20th player in international cricket history to do so.
Rohit led India’s recovery against England after the world cup hosts were rocked by the early dismissals of Shubman Gill, Kohli and Shreyas Iyer.
Gill was cleaned up by Chris Woakes with a nip-backed before pressure got the better of Kohli who tried opening his account by stepping out and clearing the infield but holed out at mid-off for a nine-ball duck off David Willey.
Woakes then struck again when he had Iyer hole out to Mark Wood on 4 leaving India struggling at 40/3 in 11.5 overs after England opted to bowl first.
Rohit has been in fine form in the ongoing world cup and recently scored a century against Afghanistan – the seventh century for him in competition’s history which is also the most by any batter so far.
*Including the India vs England match at the ODI World Cup 2023 in Lucknow on October 29.
