'Chokers Not But Certainly Something Not Right': Venkatesh Prasad on India's ICC Title Drought
India came close to winning their third ODI world cup title only to suffer a shocking defeat in the final to Australia.

India came agonisingly close to breaking their long ICC trophy drought twice in 2023 – first at the ICC World Test Championship final and then at the ODI World Cup. Both the times, Australia denied India the glory as they became the champions under the captaincy of Pat Cummins.

The twin failures meant India ended another year having not won a major global title since 2013 when they lifted the ICC Champions Trophy in England.

In fact, it was the fifth final of an ICC event that India has lost since 2013.

So have India become the new chokers?

Former India fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad says it’s not the case but there’s certainly something wrong considering the team hasn’t won a single ICC title in 10 years despite their good form.

“Chokers not, we have won 2 Test series against Australia in Australia, the last one in 2020-21 after 36 all out, I consider as one of India’s greatest especially with more than half first choice players missing. But there is certainly something not right about not winning any major tournament in 11 years,” Prasad posted in response to a query on X (formerly Twitter).

At the 2023 ODI World Cup, India were the standout team of the tournament, storming to 10 wins in a row to punch their ticket to the title clash. However, in a stunning result, they lost to unfancied Australia who had started their campaign with two defeats in a row including to India in their tournament opener.

In an earlier post of his, Prasad wished success for the Indian team in the 2024 after a year of ‘what could have been’.

“It’s been a year of “What could have been” for Team India. Dominated the World Cup only to have a very bad day when it mattered in the finals. Lost the WTC finals as well. Travis Head was brilliant in both these games. Hope in the coming year, India starts winning Championships which has alluded them for more than a decade now. Wishing the best for Team India in the coming year and always,” he wrote.
