A day after he announced stringent measures to bring down COVID-19 mismanagement in the national capital, Home Minister Amit Shah paid a surprise visit to the LNJP Hospital.
A statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs said Shah asked the Delhi chief secretary to ensure CCTV cameras are installed in coronavirus wards to ensure proper monitoring.
News18 had reported claims of relatives of COVID-19 patients that dead bodies were not being disposed of properly at the LNJP hospital and patients were not getting adequate care. The families of deceased Sant Ram and Meera Devi had claimed the hospital swapped their bodies, denying a proper cremation to Meera Devi. Another patient, Surinder Kumar, had alleged he was kept in a ward full of dead bodies.
All these horror stories were brought to the notice of the government.
MHA sources said Shah decided to visit LNJP on Sunday after the review meeting with CM Arvind Kejriwal and LG Anil Baijal but kept the visit a surprise to see the condition first hand.
"A decision was taken at that meeting that a committee of doctors and representatives from central and state health department would go for stock taking to each of the corona hospitals. HM said he would take the lead and go to a covid hospital first," an official privy to what happened in the meeting said.
Shah also told hospital management after his visit to ensure backup for canteens so if one gets infected, food supply is not hampered. He also directed psycho-social counselling of doctors and nurses to ensure they remain physically and psychologically fit to take care of COVID patients.
Shah earlier presided over an all-party meeting where it was decided to increase the total number of beds in Delhi to 18,000. The Congress suggested drafting in fourth year pharma, nursing and medicine students to help hospitals. While the BJP wanted immediate cap on pricing at private hospitals, AAP's Sanjay Singh told News18 that lockdown was not suggested by any party. "No doctor or scientist in the world is able to predict when this pandemic will end. Lockdown can not be endless, "he said.
