As Air India’s Vihaan completed a year, CEO Campbell Wilson, among the achievements and the vision going forward, in an email listed the safety measures taken to tackle pilot fatigue, in view of the multiple cases, which leads to flight disruptions.
Vihaan.AI is a five-year transformation plan. The first year or phase called ‘Taxi’ was focussed on addressing legacy issues of the flag carrier at scale and laying the foundation for future growth. The conclusion marked the beginning of ‘Take Off’, the second phase of transformation which is focused on developing the platforms, processes and systems needed to build toward excellence.
The email also spoke about how the airline plans to introduce a Pilot Sector Report (PSR) app and DocuNet! to improve safety, efficiency and compliance.
Wilson’s email read: “Today, September 15, marks Vihaan.AI’s first anniversary. While the hard work of writing this historic airline’s next chapter began well before that, it was the launch of Air India’s ambitious transformation plan that really accelerated our progress…”
“Though there are many miles left to go, every one of you should be proud of all the work you’ve put in thus far. There’s no final destination when it comes to building – and staying – a world-class airline, but every day we measure significant progress in our five transformation pillars which takes us closer to where we want to be,” Wilson wrote.
He further said the airline has “put together a snapshot of some of our most recent milestones — unveiling our new brand identity, getting the CCI’s green light for Air India’s merger with Vistara and launching the Jeppesen suite being just a few”. “When the scale of effort is so large, it’s only natural to look at what is yet to be done so, on occasions like this, we should all take a moment to acknowledge what has been achieved. So, take a moment to congratulate yourselves and see how far we have come in the past year!” the email stated.
The CEO also spoke about the airline’s historic order with Boeing and AirBus. “Of course, one of the major milestones of the last year was our historic aircraft order. Since then there’s been a huge amount of work done to prepare ourselves for their entry to service, and to formalize all the agreements and contracts,” he said.
“I have been talking to you about the safety protocols we’re introducing in all aspects of our operations. We launched Coruson a few weeks ago, which was followed by the Boeing Alertness Model (BAM)3, the fatigue mitigating tool in our Jeppesen rostering system, that will prevent publishing fatiguing rosters and pairings. Yesterday’s Jeppesen Crew Ambassadors’ session 4) discussed this in great detail along with questions on pairings/rostering, fairness, crew welfare and admin processes. I’m aware of the challenges you’re currently facing but assure you that these will stabilise as we move through a period of 4-5 roster cycles. Our DOPS team has introduced several new initiatives in tandem that seek to increase the stability of printed rosters and minimise disruptions, utilise standby blocks optimally, and set up efficient communications channels,” he wrote.
“Further, we are introducing two new digital tools – the Pilot Sector Report (PSR) app and DocuNet! These tools will revolutionise our flight operations and pilot satisfaction by improving safety, efficiency, and compliance. The PSR app streamlines post-flight reporting while DocuNet simplifies document distribution, ensuring up-to-date and synchronised information. Both tools are user-friendly and integrate seamlessly with our existing systems. Look out for more information being posted by Captain Sandhu today, and thanks to the hard work of Capt. Gaurav Sabharwal,” he wrote.
