When Unmarried Rekha Sported Sindoor at Rishi Kapoor, Neetu's Wedding and Stole Their Thunder
Rekha sported sindoor at Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor's wedding in 1980. The actress was unmarried at the time.

Bollywood actress Rekha never fails to turn heads. The gorgeous diva, who recently celebrated her 69th birthday, has everyone’s attention the moment she walks into a room. Be it with her spellbounding Kanjivaram saree looks or her casual sarees and shoes combination, Rekha has always been a diva of every era. However, did you know, Rekha not only grabbed media attention at red carpet events but also at Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor’s wedding? It has been widely reported that an unmarried Rekha attended the wedding wearing sindoor (vermillion).

As reported by Hindustan Times, Rekha allegedly sported sindoor and caught everyone’s attention at the wedding, including the cameras present there. Later, Rekha revealed that she headed to the wedding ceremony directly from a film shoot and the scene she was shooting required her to sport sindoor.

Speaking with Hindustan Times, Rekha said she forgot to take off the sindoor but she wasn’t ‘worried’ everyone’s reactions. “I think it looks rather nice on me. Sindoor suits me,” she said. The unofficial biography, Rekha: The Untold Story, penned by Yasser Usman, also described the wedding scene in the book.

“Dressed in a magnificent white sari, Rekha had a bright red bindi on her forehead. But what caught everyone’s eye was the generous dabbing of sindoor in her hair. The cameras instantly pivoted away from Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, and frenetically photographed Rekha’s curious new look. The dull drone of everyone murmuring and whispering filled the evening air; everyone wanted to know: had Rekha married?” the book wrote.

A Cine Blitz report also mentioned at the time that Rekha congratulated the newlywed Rishi and Neetu and then stood ‘bang in the middle’ of the garden.

Years later, Movie magazine reported in June 1982 that Rekha met with president of India Neelam Sanjiva Reddy and was asked, “Why do you have sindoor in your maang?”. Rekha answered, “In the city I come from, it’s fashionable to wear sindoor.”
