When Jackie Shroff’s Production Debut Tanked At The Box Office And Took A Toll On His Family

The business of acting is lucrative and well-paying but also full of risks. It sometimes takes just one film to become a flop for an actor’s career to go downhill. This is precisely why most actors make investments in other business ventures for financial backing. Right from Shah Rukh Khan to Ajay Devgn who own their own production houses to Suniel Shetty and Mithun Chakraborty who have chains of restaurants and hotels, many actors run their own businesses side by side. However, not everyone is successful in their business ventures. Sometimes even they can go south and cause massive losses. Something similar happened with Jackie Shroff.

Jackie Shroff, who had a successful stint as an actor, decided to foray into film production in the early 2000s. He decided to start the venture with the 2003 film Boom. It was produced under his wife Ayesha Shroff’s name. Boom boasted an impressive cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman, Jackie Shroff himself, Gulshan Grover and Javed Jaffrey while Katrina Kaif made her debut.

The film was, however, extremely poorly received due to its explicit content and poor direction by Kaizad Gustad. Boom was panned by critics and was a disaster at the box office, earning just Rs 1.20 crore. Most of the revenue the film made was from its moderately successful music album.

Boom’s failure was a huge setback to Jackie and Ayesha Shroff who suffered big financial losses. They reportedly owed Rs 18 crore to just one financier alone. The family had to sell off some assets to pay off the debt. In an interview, Tiger Shroff, who was 11 years old at that time, recalled the furniture in their house being taken away one by one. His bed was also taken away, forcing him to sleep on the floor. Later, Jackie Shroff revealed that this harmed his marriage and that he and his wife’s relationship “was tough after Boom”.

The family later bounced back after Jackie received many offers and Ayesha invested the money in different other ventures.
