Karan Johar recalled Deepika Padukone breaking down after Shah Rukh Khan’s birthday bash in Alibaug due to her mental health condition. The filmmaker, who hosted Deepika and Ranveer Singh on the first episode of Koffee With Karan 8, opened up about the incident while addressing her battle with mental health issues. Deepika went public with her battle with depression in 2015 and has been vocal about her mental health since. In the episode, Karan brought up the subject and shared the incident when he saw her deal with it up close.
“I was on a flight with you once, on a helicopter ride, where I saw it upfront when you spoke about your anxiety and depression and started a foundation, thank god for that because it helps so many people when a massive celebrity talks about something so deeply personal,” Karan Johar said, referring to her foundation, Live Love Laugh that aims to help those struggling with their mental health.
“We were on a helicopter ride, we were coming out, It was Shah Rukh’s birthday, we were in Alibaug. There was DP, me, Farhan and I don’t remember who else. It was a closed helicopter and I saw it up close that how she was. For those 25-30 minutes, she just had tears dropping off her face and just crying and I remmeber holding her hand right through it. She just cried. I just looked at her and I was like, ‘I don’t even know how this feels’ till it happened to me,” he added.
Karan revealed he experienced his first anxiety attack earlier this year, during the launch of Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC). He said he thought he was having a cardiac arrest and added that Varun Dhawan helped him get out of the room. Deepika Padukone extended her support to Karan after he poured his heart out.
