Irani Cup 2024: Shardul Thakur Discharged from Hospital After Battling with Fever
Shardul Thakur was rushed to the hospital after his gritty 73-run 9th-wicket stand with Sarfaraz Khan for Mumbai in the ongoing Irani Cup fixture against the Rest of India.

Shardul Thakur, who played a vital role in extending Mumbai’s innings in the ongoing Irani Cup against Rest of India at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, has been discharged from the hospital. He was admitted in Medanta due to a viral infection on Wednesday.

Thakur had been saved for a late batting position due to his illness but was called into action when Mohit Avasthi fell late on Day 2. As the innings progressed, Thakur’s health deteriorated, and he was taken to the hospital after the day’s play concluded.

“He was not feeling well for the entire day and was running on high fever, which was the main reason he came out to bat late. He was feeling weak and he slept in the dressing room after taking medicine. But he wanted to bat despite feeling low. We have got his blood test done for malaria and dengue. We are waiting for the results. Till then, he will spend the night in hospital,” a source was quoted as saying in a report by The Indian Express.

Despite battling a fever, Thakur walked out to bat at No. 10 and contributed a crucial 36 runs off 59 balls in hot and humid conditions. He was seen batting with a towel covering his head in the extreme heat in Lucknow. His partnership with Sarfaraz Khan helped the latter cross a historic double century before stumps.

Medical reports have ruled out any serious illness. However, it remains unlikely that he will take the field during Rest of India’s first innings. The fast bowler, who has been a key figure in India’s domestic and international setup, may rejoin the team in the dressing room if his recovery progresses well.

As for the game itself, Rest of India chose to bowl first but Mumbai batted for two days. Starting with Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer who came in when Mumbai were 37/3. The duo added more than 100 runs, Iyer fell after his fifty while Rahane missed out on his ton by 3 runs. Tanush Kotian then scored a fine fifty along with Sarfaraz Khan. However, in the whole batting chart, it was Sarfaraz Khan’s 222 which made the headlines.
