Akshay Kumar is one of the biggest and busiest actors in Bollywood today. Since his debut in the 1991 film Saugandh and his breakthrough performance in the 1992 film Khiladi, the actor has had a long and illustrious career spanning over three decades. However, before making it big in films, the actor led a humble life in Delhi. In a recent interview, he recalled living with 24 people in the same room.
Talking to ANI, Akshay said, “We were 24 people living in the same house in Chandni Chowk. We all would sleep in the same room. In the morning, when we woke up for exercise, everyone would jump over each other to get out.” Even when Akshay and his family moved to Mumbai, they lived in a small house in Sion Koliwada where they paid a rent of Rs. 100.
Despite this, Akshay said that he and his family were always happy. He said, “I swear to God, there wasn’t a single day where we did not smile or laugh. Now, that we have money, sometimes we feel a bit sad but at that time, there was nothing to be sad about, We would have dal chawal, jeera aloo, aloo gobhi, bhindi, we would eat all of this and we were happy.”
Akshay said that despite their meagre means, his family would always save money to spend on one luxury – movie tickets. Akshay said, “We would miss our meal in the morning to save money for the ticket.”
In the same interview, Akshay also recalled the time he had failed the seventh standard. This moment was a pivotal time in his life. When his father learnt about him failing, he got angry and asked him what he wanted to become when he grew up. Akshay said that though he did not want to become an actor, he still said “Hero banna chahta hun (I want to be a hero).”
The actor is currently seen in Mission Raniganj. The film was released in theatres last Friday, October 6.
