Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan are among Bollywood’s most-loved veteran couples, and their vintage interviews continue to delight fans across the internet. These glimpses into their past not only provide a nostalgic look at their illustrious careers but also offer fascinating insights into their relationship and how it has evolved over the years. One such interview is the BBC chat with the stars from 1983, when Jaya Bachchan was on a break from films. Interestingly, Jaya Bachchan had starred in Silsila – with Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha – in 1981.
When Jaya Bachchan was asked why she had taken a step back from films, she joked that it was because she had her hands full with three kids at home. With a knowing glance at Amitabh Bachchan, he quickly chimed in to clarify that the three in question were actually Abhishek Bachchan, Shweta Bachchan, and — of course — himself. Talking about a comeback in films, Jaya Bachchan said, “Nahi shuru toh nahin kiya hai. Teen bachhe samhaalne padhte hai (No, I haven’t started yet. I have to take care of three kids).” When the host asked, “Teen kaun kaunse hai (Who are these three kids)?” To this Amitabh Bachchan said, “Do humare hai aur ek main (Two of yours and the third one is me).”
Interestingly, in Koffee With Karan’s second season, Jaya Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan made an appearance with Hema Malini and Esha Deol. Shweta during the chat, said, “Abhishek is so smooth. He butters up everyone the right way. I am the one who gets into trouble because I have an opinion on everything. When he sits with mumma, he is like, ‘You’re right mumma’. And when he is with dad, he is like, ‘You’re right, dad.’ He is not offensive. He jumps whenever convenient.”
Jaya Bachchan then mentioned, “The biggest baby takes more attention than anyone else.” When Karan asked if she was talking about Abhishek, she denied it. Karan then mentioned Amitabh Bachchan’s name, and Jaya smiled and nodded.
