The Sky Is Pink, starring Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar, premiered five years ago and quickly won hearts with its poignant storytelling. Directed by Shonali Bose, the film is based on the real-life story of Aisha Chaudhary, who battled severe combined immunodeficiency and pulmonary fibrosis. It depicted the journey of her parents, Aditi and Niren, as they navigated the complexities of their marriage while coping with their daughter’s illness.
In an old interview with Mumbai Mirror, Bose recalled a scene where Priyanka became very emotional and continued to cry even after the scene was ended. “An emotional shoot was when she had to break down after a scene. After I called ‘cut,’ I hugged her, and she couldn’t stop crying. She kept whispering, ‘I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry. I know now what it means to lose a child. I am so sorry for Ishlu.’ I continued holding her,” Bose said. Priyanka’s response after the cut showed her compassion for Bose, who lost her son Ishan at 16 in a freak electrical accident.
In the same interview, Bose revealed that Priyanka Chopra chose to use the nickname “Ishlu” for Rohit Saraf’s character, who played her son. She said, “Priyanka called Ishan “Ishlu,” which is not a name Aditi calls her son by. Priyanka heard me calling my Ishan when I spoke about him and asked me, ‘Can I call him Ishlu in this scene?’ I just smiled from ear to ear.”
The Sky Is Pink premiered at the 44th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2019, where it received an impressive four-minute standing ovation. The event was attended by the cast, including Priyanka, Farhan and Rohit Saraf along with Bose and co-producer Siddharth Roy Kapur, although Zaira Wasim was not present.
Priyanka shared several photos from the red carpet, expressing her joy in a heartfelt caption: “A special night with special people, sharing this labour of love which took us over a year to bring to life. It was an unforgettable experience…. Thank you Aditi and Niren for trusting us with your story and for joining us at #TheSkyIsPink world premiere at TIFF. Shonali Bose you are the true star of this film! #RonnieScrewvala #SiddharthRoyKapur, as always, it’s been amazing collaborating with you. We’ve done some great films together and this one definitely is up there with the rest of them for me.”
The Sky Is Pink marked Zaira Wasim’s final appearance before she retired from Bollywood.
