According to the official synopsis of Moana 2 from Disney, the upcoming animation is “Joined by Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”

Disney announced Moana 2 in February. It had surprised many who were initially expecting a Disney+ series continuation of Moana’s story. During the development phase, the makers reportedly decided to create a feature film instead. Disney CEO Bob Iger explained that the decision was influenced by the high quality of the project and the ongoing popularity of the first Moana movie on Disney+. The original film, directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, was a massive success when it came out in 2016, reports CBR.

Apart from making an impressive amount of money at the box office, Moana had also received multiple Academy Award nominations, including the Best Animated Film.
