Ryan Reynolds Shares How He Secured Madonna’s Hit Song For Deadpool & Wolverine
Upon requesting authorisation to incorporate her 1989 hit song in Deadpool & Wolverine, Reynolds disclosed that the Queen of Pop "gave a great note" for the scene.

Ryan Reynolds recently said that getting a classic song into Deadpool & Wolverine required some persuasion. With co-star Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy by his side, the 47-year-old actor said that it needed an in-person pitch to mega-star Madonna to get her 1989 hit song, Like a Prayer. As Levy described it, the creative deal came together through more calls than the typical exchange between managers and solicitors. The trio recounted the story in a joint SiriusXM interview with Andy Cohen on Friday.

Upon requesting authorization to incorporate her 1989 hit song in Deadpool & Wolverine, Reynolds disclosed that the Queen of Pop “gave a great note” for the scene that was eventually included in the final version.

He stated on SiriusXM, “Also, let’s preface it with the fact that — Madonna doesn’t just license the song, and particularly that song has not been licensed.” Reynolds went on to explain that it was a huge thing to ask for it and even more so to use it.

He said the three personally visited Madonna to demonstrate to her where, when and why it was being utilised.

Levy stated that throughout the visit, they had a feeling of “meeting royalty.” Reynolds even made a joke about needing to consult a member of Madonna’s staff on how he should properly address the singer.

“Like am I allowed to just say, ‘Madonna?’” the actor said. “Like, ‘Hello Madonna, I’m Ryan.’”

All things considered, the visit was a success since the legendary artist gave them permission to incorporate the song and gave them some useful advice for the sequence involving Like A Prayer.

Reynolds stated, “She gave a great note.”

“She watched it, and I’m not kidding, [she said], You need to do this. And damn it, if she wasn’t like spot on.”

This is now one of the rare re-uses of Madonna’s fourth-largest Billboard smash. Like a Prayer was first included in a Pepsi commercial. Nevertheless, the campaign came to an abrupt end when Madonna’s own, Mary Lambert-directed music video appeared on MTV, reports Vanity Fair.

The video has a lot of religious imagery, with Madonna dancing in front of flaming crosses while wearing a slip and kissing a black statue depicting a saint after it comes to life.
