Director PS Vinothraj made it big in 2023 when his second film Kottukkaali, starring Soori and Anna Ben, was selected for the prestigious 74th Berlin International Film Festival. Now, it is all set for release at the cinema halls, on August 23. Sivakarthikeyan Productions, which is producing Kottukkaali has announced the film’s release, on Twitter with a video. The video shows separate shots of actors Soori, Anna Ben and a rooster, leaving the viewers to guess more about the film. The tweet read, “After all the accolades and appreciation from film festivals across the world, we are now bringing it to our audience. #Kottukkaali will be releasing in theatres on August 23”.

Raghav Ramesh provided the sync sound for Kottukkaali and Sakthi Vel handled its photography. Ganesh Siva handled the editing, while Suren G and Alagiakoothan handled the sound design. In an earlier interaction with the media, co-producer Kalai Arasu said that the film is a drama about humans and their emotions. According to him, the makers wish to withhold the precise narrative of the film for the time being. Following Vetrimaaran’s Viduthalai: Part 1, Kottukkaali marks Soori’s second film as a male lead. This film will be actress Anna Ben’s first in the Tamil cinema industry. Her most renowned part to date has been Helen, the title character in the 2019 Malayalam movie. According to Kalai, actors like Soori and Anna Ben were required by Kottukkaali’s storyline.
The title of the film Kottukkaali is an uncommon term. The co-producer Kalai explains its meaning by saying that this film is a colloquial term used for both endearment and reprimand. He said of the roosters on the first-look poster, “The rooster is like a character in Kottukkaali. It makes the screenplay move forward”. Previous Berlin Film Festival screenings included Paruthiveeran, Alai Payuthey, and many other films that were released in theatres. This will be the first time a Tamil film will have a global premiere.
Kottukkaali will be clashing at the box-office with the filmmaker Mari Selvaraj’s Vaazhai. Vaazhai stars an ensemble cast of actors Nikhila Vimal, Priyanka Nair, Dhivya Dhuraisamy and Kalaiyarasan.
