Manisha Koirala is all set for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s new series, Heeramandi, where she plays the main character in India before it gained independence. In an interview with India Today, she talked about a big mistake she made: saying no to a movie by Yash Chopra because Madhuri Dixit was also in it. Manisha said, “One of the regrets that I have in my career is that I didn’t do Yash Chopra’s film. I was pitted against Madhuri ji (Dixit), and I got scared. I backed out of that project.”
Later, Manisha acted with Madhuri in Raj Kumar Santoshi’s Lajja. She said, “Madhuri ji is such a good person and actress. There was no need for me to be insecure. I think when you have a strong actor in front of you, you only perform better. They encourage you to perform better. That comes from age and experience. I loved working with Madhuri ji in that (movie). I loved working with Rekha ji as well.”
Yash Chopra’s Dil To Pagal Hai was considered by several Bollywood actors from the 90s. However, it was Karishma Kapoor who eventually played the role of Nisha. Her dance-off with Madhuri, known as “The Dance of Envy,” became a favorite among fans. Prior to Karishma, Urmila Matondkar, Kajol, Raveena Tandon, and Juhi Chawla had also turned down the opportunity to be part of the project.
Manisha plays the character of Mallikajaan, a courtesan in the red-light area of Heera Mandi in Lahore. Set in the 1940s, the series delves into the era of pre-partition India. The epic delves deep into the dynamic between courtesans, Nawabs (governors during the Mughal empire), and British officers. Heeramandi also stars Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, and Sharmin Segal. It is slated to drop on Netflix on May 1.
