Randeep Hooda might not be the god but he is the elixir who saves 'Laal Rang' from being another low-budget, shoddy film.
'Laal Rang', directed by Syed Ahmad Afzal touches upon the topic of illegal blood trade prominent in North India. The film's theme is unique and opens your eyes to the world that you never knew existed, in such a way. The way terms like 'pishach', 'bhoot' and 'dracula' are used, is hilarious in itself. There is dark humour in the film that will make you have a sly, evil laugh by yourself. So what exactly does the film lack?
The director's intentions are good, but he fails miserably at the execution part. The story takes a lot of time before it catches pace and unnecessary time is wasted on character development. At a point, it appears as if Syed didn't has enough faith in his own story and wasted time on explaining the emotions rather than the plot.
What could've been a dark, edgy film with thrills and eye-opening sequences, becomes an emotional tale of friendship and love.
However, it's the cast of the film that actually makes it worth watching. Randeep Hooda is the knight with a shining armour who holds the attention of the viewers with his brilliant acting. Hooda as Shankar is loyal, business minded person who wears his heart on his sleeves. He is loyal to his friends and an indulgent lover. The sincerity with which Hooda has essayed the role is commendable and makes you admire the versatility of the actor. The Haryani accent topped with the mannerism of a so called 'blood mafia' is just brilliant.
Akshay Oberoi as an innocent boy turned into a naive criminal is worth noticing. Oberoi as Rajesh has a certain vulnerability in him that connects with you. The way greed and ego changes him into a completely different person is honest and real. Pia Bajpai as Poonam does justice to her character. She's naive, dreamy and perfectly plays a small town girl with her mannerism.
The film also stars Rajneesh Duggal and he's okay in his parts. The other supporting cast are good and make you believe in the story. The film could've been a brilliant piece, only if the director would've played his part well. The cast was great, topic is unique, all it needed was decent execution.
'Laal Rang' becomes a tale of bromance and love more than a bloody thriller. Randeep Hooda does everything in his capacity and emerges as a star but overall the film is as average and as predictable as Monday breakfast.
Wish Syed Ahmad Afzal could use the provided talent in a better woven script. Give it a watch if you are a fan of relationship drama and for Randeep Hooda's impeccable Haryanai avatar.
