Johnny Depp Felt ‘Oddly Lucky’ To Play King Louis XV In Jeanne Du Barry For This Reason
Johnny Depp felt 'lucky,' but in several different ways for being offered the role of the French King Louis XV in Jeanne du Barry.

Johnny Depp is back on the red carpet and how. The Hollywood actor rolled out his French film Jeanne Du Barry, posing for photos and signing autographs at its UK premiere held at the Curzon Mayfair Theatre on Monday, April 15. Depp, for his appearance, was accompanied by the film’s co-star and director Maïwenn on stage where the duo introduced the film briefly.

While speaking to the media before the film’s screening, Depp shared that he felt “strangely, oddly, perversely lucky” to have been offered to play French King Louis XV in his upcoming film. Underlining the reason behind the statement, the actor went on to add, “When Maïwenn and I first actually met and talked about the notion of me doing the film and playing Louis XV, the King of France — see that’s when instantly what happens in your brain is you instantly go back to Kentucky, where, like, everything is fried. So you realise that you’ve come from the bellybutton of nowhere and suddenly you end up playing the King of France.”

Depp also believed that Maïwenn, the director of the film, was courageous enough to cast him in the film as he added, “It made no sense to me, I tried to talk her out of it But she wasn’t hearing it.” On the other hand, Maïwenn explained that she was keen on making “Jeanne du Barry” since 2016 for her belief in feminism.

Meanwhile, Jeanne Du Barry marks Depp’s comeback to the screen post his controversial Virginia trial with ex-wife Amber Heard. It narrates the story of a working woman Jeanne Vaubernier, who, in a bid to escape her impoverished life, uses her charm. The story takes an interesting turn when she has a “love at first sight” moment with King Louis XV.

The film starring Benjamin Lavernhe, Pierre Richard, Melvil Poupaud, and Pascal Greggory, had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023. It had earned a seven-minute standing ovation for the actor and director. Jeanne Du Barry will have a theatrical release on May 2.
