For fans of horror films, the wait is over. Horror movie enthusiasts can finally rejoice as the much-anticipated return of the Insidious franchise has been officially confirmed. The Insidious series has always been known for its ability to send shivers down your spine, with its terrifying plot twists, eerie atmospheres, and unforgettable ghostly figures. This franchise has established itself as a staple in the horror genre, entertaining audiences with its tales of haunted families and otherworldly encounters. Sony Pictures has officially confirmed a new chapter to the popular franchise, coming to the theatres on August 29, 2025.
The next movie in the series is being produced by Blumhouse Productions and co-produced by Screen Gems, reports Variety. Details about the upcoming film are still under wraps, and it remains unclear whether series regulars like Patrick Wilson and Leigh Whannell will return.
The upcoming film will mark the sixth installment in the horror franchise. Its previous film was Insidious: The Red Door which was released last year. The Red Door had brought back actors Patrick Wilson and Ty Simpkins to the series and also marked Wilson’s debut as a director. The fifth film, according to Variety, was also a significant success at the summer box office across the globe.
The Insidious franchise has been a major player in the horror genre since it first launched in 2010 under the direction of James Wan. Over the years, the series has become one of the most successful horror franchises to exist.
Despite switching distributors multiple times, moving from FilmDistrict to Focus Features to Universal, and now to Sony, Blumhouse Productions has remained a constant presence, co-producing each installment with various other production companies.
Variety also informs that before the release of The Red Door in 2023, Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions hinted at a significant break for the series. In an interview with DiscussingFilm, he mentioned that the fifth entry might be the last Insidious film for a while, reportedly saying, “It may not be a forever rest, but it’s certainly going to be a very long rest. There’s not a plan — as there has been with every prior Insidious movie – there’s no current plan in place for number six.” However, if the newly announced release date holds, the franchise’s hiatus will have lasted just over two years.
The next chapter in this iconic horror series is sure to be one of the most talked-about films of 2025.
